People You Didn’t Know Attended HBCU’s

Crowns, melaninated skin, crowded libraries, and Fried Chicken Wednesday are a few things that you might think of when you think of a Historically Black Colleges and Universities. No matter the nostalgia you feel when reminiscing on your HBCU experience, you cannot deny that attending a HBCU was the best decision you ever made. To be black, proud, and attend one of the 107 HBCU’s means that you have walked where giants have walked and gained a worldview that will help you move mountains. With Google launching a West Campus at Howard University to change the landscape for Minorities in Tech to a former FAMUAN running to be the First African-American Governor of Florida, HBCU’s continue to thrive and produce alumni that are conquering our complex world.

1. Lil’ Yachty  

Lil’ Yachty

Miles Parks McCollum aka Lil’ Yachty attended Alabama State University before his debut album, Lil’Boat, was released in March 2016. Grammy Award-Winning Two Chainz also is an ASU Alumnus.

2.  Erykah Badu

Erykah Badu

Theater Major and Campus Queen, Erykah Badu attended Grambling State University before leaving in 1993 to pursue a full-time career as a Neo-Soul artist and Tyrone’s worst nightmare.

3. Nicole Bernard

Nicole Bernard

Back in 2014, Fox did something amazing- they promoted Howard Alumna, Nicole Bernard, as their new Executive Vice President. Bernard received her Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast and Journalism from Howard University in 1987 then she went on to receive her Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center in 1990.

4. Kym Whitley

Kym Whitley

Known as the funny girl in movies like Next Friday and Along Came Polly, Kym Whitley is an Alumna of Fisk University.

5. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

Originally from Bradenton, Florida, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is a cornerback for the New York Giants. Before he was making plays in the NFL, Cromartie excelled as a student-athlete in football and track and field at Tennessee State University.

6. Mitzi Miller

Receiving her B.A in English from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in 1997, Mitzi Miller is a journalist who has worked her way to the top. Currently the Head of Development at Rainforest Entertainment, Miller is the former Editor-in-Chief for both Jet and Ebony Magazine.

7. Earl G. Graves, Sr.

Founder and Publisher, Earl G. Graves, Sr. is the founder of Black Enterprise. He attended Morgan State University where he received his degree in Economics.  

8. Peyton Alex Smith

BET has a thing for FAMUANS. Peyton Alex Smith attended Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University before playing Cedric on The Quad.

9. Rosalind Brewer

Rosalind Brewer is the former first African-American Woman CEO of Sam’s Club. Brewer received her Chemistry Degree from Spelman College before studying Advanced Management at The Wharton School.

10. Ta-Nehisi Coates

Ta-Nehisi Coates attended Howard University before becoming a full-time Journalist and Writer. Popular for his work with The Atlantic,  Coates writes about how race, culture, and politics affect Black lives. He won the National Book Award for his book, Between the World and Me - a dedication to his teenage son.
